Ujjwal Roy, District Representative from Narail:
Illegal nets seized and destroyed in Kalia, Narail.
In order to implement the Fisheries Protection and Conservation Act-1950, a drive has been conducted against illegal nets in the Nalia River of Kalabaria Union in the Naragati area of Kalia Upazila of Narail. Ujjwal Roy, District Representative from Narail said that the drive was conducted on Sunday (January 11) afternoon under the leadership of Upazila Fisheries Officer Chayan Biswas. A team from Naragati Police Station provided overall support in this drive.
According to the concerned sources, during the drive in Kalia Upazila of Narail, various types of illegal nets used in the Nalia River were identified. At that time, a total of seven China Duari nets and 5 char-ghera nets were seized from the river. These nets were seriously disrupting the natural fish breeding process of the river and were posing a serious threat to aquatic biodiversity. Later, the recovered illegal nets were burnt in public. Through this campaign, important steps have been taken to ensure the free movement of fish in the river as well as to preserve indigenous fish species. In this regard, Kalia Upazila Fisheries Officer Chayan Biswas said that due to the use of illegal and prohibited nets, the reproduction of fish in rivers and canals is being severely damaged and the balance of the environment is being destroyed. Such campaigns will be conducted regularly in the interest of protecting fish resources and implementing the law. He urged fishermen to refrain from using prohibited nets.
