Kamal Hossain, Benapole (Jesore) Correspondent: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested a smuggler named Shariful Islam (56) from Baulia Bazar area of Jessore with two gold bars weighing 118.75 grams. BGB members informed the journalists about the matter through a press briefing on Sunday afternoon.
The BGB said that on Saturday (November 09, 2025) at around 8:30 pm, a special patrol team of Jessore Battalion 49 BGB set up a check post on the paved road of Baulia Bazar based on secret information and arrested the suspect. Later, during a search of his body, two gold bars weighing 118.75 grams were recovered hidden in a special way around his waist.
The market value of the seized gold is 20 lakh 54 thousand 256 taka. In addition, a mobile phone worth Tk 20,000 and Tk 752 in cash were seized from him. The total amount of seizure, including gold, stands at Tk 20,75,08.
The arrested Shariful Islam is the son of Rashid, a resident of Kakdanga Dakshin Keragachi area of Kolaroa police station in Satkhira district. During initial interrogation, he admitted that he collected the gold bars from gold smugglers from Dholaipar in Dhaka and was going to Benapole border route via Jessore to smuggle them to India.
After taking legal action against Shariful Islam, who was arrested in this incident, he was handed over to Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station.
In this regard, Jessore Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Saifullah Siddiqui said that the trend of gold smuggling across the border has increased in recent times. BGB operations are continuing to prevent such smuggling. BGB is on the highest alert to protect domestic money and markets at the border and this operation will continue in the future.
