Md. Kamal Hossain, Benapole (Jesore) Correspondent: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a youth named Md. Basar Sheikh (23) along with a gold bar weighing 173.76 grams from Chanpara Bazar area of Jessore. The estimated value of recovered gold is 26 lakh 89 thousand 109 taka.
A patrol of Jessore Battalion (49 BGB) conducted a tip-off and arrested him around 10 am on Thursday (October 30).
The detained Basar Sheikh is the son of Sohel Sheikh of Padmadi village of Baliakandi police station in Rajbari district. During initial interrogation, he said that he was going to Jessore after collecting the gold bar from a group of smugglers in Jatrabari area of Dhaka. The intention was to smuggle the gold across the border into India.
According to BGB, the patrol team arrested Basar Sheikh from the paved road of Chanpara Bazar under Kotwali Police Station of Jessore. At that time, a gold bar was found specially hidden in his waist. Later, a mobile phone and cash of Tk 1,720 were found on his body.
According to BGB sources, the estimated value of recovered gold is 26 lakh 89 thousand 109 taka. Apart from this, the estimated seizure value of the total seized goods, including the value of mobile phones and cash, is 27 lakh 10 thousand 829 taka.
After filing a case against the detained Basar Sheikh, he was handed over to Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station.
In this regard, Jessore battalion captain Lt. Colonel Saifullah Siddiqui said, "There has been an increase in the trend of gold smuggling from Bangladesh to India in recent times. BGB's patrolling and raiding activities have been strengthened to prevent such smuggling. Such raiding activities of BGB will continue in the border areas."
